Black metal band formed in 1984, in Ski/Oslo, Norway. Mayhem is infamous for being connected to a series of incidents involving criminal activity; while these crimes do not solely represent the extent of the band's notoriety, they are significant in both the band's history and the history of black metal. These incidents include Per Yngve Ohlin's suicide, Øystein Aarseth's murder, which was committed by Varg Vikernes, and the arson of multiple churches across Norway in the 1990s.
