East 17 are an English house pop group formed in Walthamstow, London, in 1991. The original line-up consisted of Tony Mortimer, Brian Harvey, John Hendy and Terry Coldwell. The group took its name from the E17 postcode area of Walthamstow. Their debut album, Walthamstow, was released in 1992 and was also named after their home district. Tony Mortimer was the group's principal songwriter during their original period, while Brian Harvey became the main lead vocalist. The original line-up released three studio albums as East 17: Walthamstow (1992), Steam (1994) and Up All Night (1995). Their 1994 single "Stay Another Day" reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart and was the UK Christmas No. 1 that year. Mortimer left the group in 1997. Brian Harvey, John Hendy and Terry Coldwell subsequently continued under the name E-17. This line-up released Resurrection in 1998. Releases from the 1997/1998 period that are specifically associated with this renamed line-up and the Resurrection project should therefore be credited to the E-17 alias. The four original members reunited for a one-off performance in 2006. East 17 were reactivated again in 2011 with Mortimer, Hendy and Coldwell joined by Blair Dreelan in place of Harvey. The group returned to the East 17 name for this period and released Dark Light in 2012. Mortimer left again in 2013. Later line-ups included Craig Robbie Elkins and, following John Hendy's departure, Joe Livermore. The album 24/7 was released internationally in 2021. For Discogs purposes, E-17 is used as an alias only for releases connected with the band's late-1990s renaming and the Resurrection period. For releases up to 1997 and again from 2011 onward, as well as compilations, reissues and other releases where the printed artist name appears as E-17 or E.17 but is not connected with the Resurrection project, use East 17 as the primary artist name and enter the printed form as an Artist Name Variation (ANV). member list: Tony Mortimer: 1991–1997; 2006; 2010–2013 Brian Harvey: 1991–1997; 1998–1999; 2006–2010 John Hendy: 1991–1997; 1998–1999; 2006–2013; 2014–2018 Terry Coldwell: 1991–1997; 1998–1999; 2006–2013; 2014–present Blair Dreelan: 2011 Craig Robbie Elkins: 2014–present Terry John: 2018–2019 Joe Livermore: 2019/2020–present
